The Road Less Traveled...Umbria

Umbria is a place of mystery. Little is known of the "shadowy" Umbrii who gave this central Italian region its name. We do know that they hunted its heavily forested slopes, farmed its fertile valleys and fished its clear lakes and streams. The Etruscans have left their mark there as have the Romans. Many of its imposing and beautiful hill towns were important centers of culture, religion and politics during the middle ages and Renaissance. Some of the most pivotal pieces of Western art can be found on the walls of both its most magnificent of cathedrals and most humble of village churches.

Umbria produces some of the most highly prized olive oil in the world. It is home to one of Italy’s finest yet least known wines, Sagrantino di Montefalco. It is the fertile hunting ground for the precious black truffle. Italians treasure its pork and wild boar products. Surprisingly, Italy’s "green heart" remains largely unexplored by North Americans. Its food and wine are often overlooked in favor of the fruits of its more wellknown neighbor to the north, Tuscany. This is all the better for those of us who have traveled through Umbria for many years and still enjoy the easy pace and country charm of this largely unspoiled region.

During our tours, we focus on the food, wine, art and culture of Umbria. We visit the small farms and estates of some of its finest producers of wine and olive oil. We dine is some of its best family operated restaurants and trattorie, the ones favored by the local folks. We visit towns that are awash in history and art and yet remain off the beaten track. There are stories to be told about Umbria. We invite you to be the narrator. Walk with us on the road less traveled. Join us for our next Harvest Tour.
